                   MORRO BAY

Someone is hunting whales off the coast of Morro Bay.  Placid waters of the harbor and the looming presence of the great rock create a quiet atmosphere, home to fishermen, sailors, and divers who love the sea, and visitors seeking the comfort of ocean breezes and the peaceful ambience of the dunes. But an undercurrent of criminal activity – killing of sperm whales - is uncovered by a local diver, a marine biologist, and a visiting oceanographer.  Their discovery of a great sperm whale cruising offshore waters, awaiting revenge on the renegade fishermen who killed his mate, sets them on a dangerous course, through the back streets of the idyllic town and deep waters surrounding an offshore seamount, to expose the criminals before another whale is killed.  The mysterious atmosphere of the outer dunes, shadows cast by Morro Rock, and discoveries made in the harbor and during deep ocean dives, send three friends on a desperate quest, on rough seas in a small boat, that ends with a miraculous communion.

PASSAGES HOME

A captivating work of fiction based on the real experience of an American tragedy, PASSAGES HOME follows an Iraq War veteran, Jason, as he struggles to over-come post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Traveling northward along California’s coast, he arrives in the mystical town of Mendocino where he encounters several special people who quietly, almost secretly, offer friendship and guidance that dissipate his anger and anxiety, and provide pathways by which Jason begins to regain his true self.

By working in the vineyards and a century-old winery, Jason learns of the amazing power of nature’s transformations. He receives healing messages when he sees parallels between his cataclysmic life-experiences and the life-span of grapes he harvests from old vines. Every vine reminds him of a life of struggle, against heat, drought, wind, and rain. Yet, the vines and their grapes survive the challenges to produce something strong and beautiful that endured the harvest and crush only to emerge as a timeless thing of greater beauty, vitality, and strength.

The challenges of a forest fire and a great flood finally rid Jason of his alter-ego, the vicious warrior he was during his tours in Iraq.

The tender messages and powerful wisdom revealed by Jason’s experiences in Mendocino transform his view of the world, dissipate his post-traumatic stress disorder, and restore the peaceful life he once knew.

PASSAGES HOME speaks to the heart of anyone who suffers with PTSD, and their loved ones, letting them know that a passage can be made to that cherished safe haven, home.

READERS' VOICES

One of my favorite aspects of Passages Home is the sense of reconciliation that emerges through the story. As the protagonist confronts his past, there’s a palpable sense of healing and coming to terms with what was and what could have been. I found this theme especially moving, as it reflects the often difficult but necessary process of closure and acceptance.

Dwyer’s writing also has a comforting, almost nostalgic quality to it that made me feel as though I was right there with the protagonist his journey. The vivid descriptions of places, people, and moments you revisit allow the reader to experience the return alongside you. There’s a warmth to your narrative that makes Passages Home more than just a memoir or reflection; it feels like a shared experience, one that invites us to examine our own relationships to our pasts.

In conclusion, Passages Home is a beautifully written and deeply introspective work that resonates with anyone who has ever longed to understand their place in the world or struggled with the complexity of returning home. Your honest and heartfelt exploration of the emotions and experiences tied to home makes this book a must-read for anyone seeking to understand themselves through the lens of their past.

Rarely do I find fiction that engages and delights on multiple readings—this gem of a story, Passages Home, delivers every time. Iraq war veteran Jason returns to civilian life not quite the same, having been diagnosed with PTSD. The author’s keen understanding of this affliction and descriptive prowess lets us feel the anguish and alienation suffered by his trauma-surviving protagonist, whose wound is really a wound of the soul.
